Super Eagles winger Femi Azeez has signed for Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion in a deal worth up to £15 million — and he has been candid about exactly what convinced him to make the leap from the Championship.
What the Manager Said That Sealed the Deal
Azeez was straightforward about the human element behind the transfer. “I had a chat with the manager beforehand and his attention to detail and everything that he was telling me — he got me really excited to come,” he said. That kind of direct engagement from a top-flight manager carries weight, and Azeez made no attempt to dress it up in diplomatic language.
He also pointed to Brighton’s broader identity as a football club. “The club has got a very good track record of developing players, and I know the ambition and the drive — everything about the club just aligned with me as a person. So I thought it was a great fit.”
The Player Brighton Are Getting
Azeez was equally direct when describing his own qualities. “I’m direct and I love to take on players one on one. I love to get the better of my defenders. Put lots of crosses in the box. I create opportunities,” he said. “I can score a few goals as well — I’ve got an eye for goal. I like to create, direct, hard-working, relentless.”
That profile fits neatly with Brighton’s model. The club has built a well-earned reputation for spotting talent in the Football League and giving it room to grow at the highest level — a proposition that makes them genuinely attractive to ambitious players rather than a mere stepping stone.
A Question Mark From the International Stage
Not everything surrounding Azeez is straightforward. Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle publicly criticised the winger despite him scoring twice on his Nigeria debut against Zimbabwe. Chelle’s complaint was specific: Azeez had not followed certain tactical instructions, and the coach made clear that goals alone would not be enough to satisfy him.
Whether that friction carries into Azeez’s club career remains to be seen. What is clear is that Brighton have backed their judgement with serious money, and Azeez arrives at the Amex with something to prove at the highest level of English football.
