Australia is offering eligible foreign nationals a free multiple-entry visa — and the details are worth knowing.
Australia’s Department of Home Affairs has set out the full terms of its eVisitor visa, formally listed as subclass 651. The permit carries no application fee and grants eligible nationals repeated access to Australia across a 12-month window. Each visit may last up to three months, and holders may enter as many times as they wish within that period.
Who it is for and what it covers
The eVisitor visa is available to nationals of eligible countries — primarily those in Europe and a selection of other nations with which Australia maintains close ties. Once approved, the visa opens the door to a broad range of travel purposes.
There is one notable carve-out on the study front. Applicants intending to train in childcare settings, or to study medicine, dentistry, nursing or paramedicine, are directed towards the Visitor visa (subclass 600) and must complete relevant health checks before applying.
The hard limits holders must respect
The eVisitor visa is not a work permit. Full stop.
Holders cannot perform paid work for any Australian employer, provide services to a business or organisation, or sell goods to the public. Australia’s immigration authority is explicit: the visa may be cancelled if a holder works — or is merely found to intend to work — while in the country. Removal from Australia or refusal of entry are both live possibilities for anyone who breaches this condition. Volunteer work may be permissible under certain schemes, but standard employment is entirely off the table.
Extending a stay beyond three months is equally impossible on this visa. Holders who wish to remain longer must apply for a separate visa suited to their circumstances. The eVisitor visa itself cannot be extended once granted; a fresh application under a different category would be required.
Frequent visitors face scrutiny
Australia’s immigration authority flags a further practical reality. Travellers who make frequent or lengthy visits may be questioned about their travel purpose upon re-entry. Anyone found not to be a genuine visitor risks cancellation of their eVisitor visa on the spot.
