Forest Guard Salaries in Nigeria: What the NFSS Pays by Rank and How to Apply

Nigeria’s forests are under sustained attack from illegal loggers, poachers and armed criminal groups. The Nigerian Forest Security Service (NFSS) is responding with one of the largest paramilitary recruitment drives in the country’s history, targeting 130,000 forest guard positions nationwide. For Nigerians considering a career in forest security, understanding the pay structure and the application process is the obvious starting point.

The NFSS operates under the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Environment. Headquartered in Abuja, the service currently employs over 50,000 personnel. It was formerly known as the Nigerian Hunters and Forest Security Service (NHFSS) before being officially renamed in late 2024. Its Commander General is Dr Joshua Wole Osatimehin, and President Bola Tinubu has approved the expansion, with ONSA directing both recruitment and arming. The service includes a National Forest Guard Special Squad, whose members are trained and vetted by the Department of State Services in collaboration with other armed agencies.

What does a forest guard actually earn?

The NFSS has not published a centralised federal pay scale, so the figures in circulation are public estimates rather than confirmed government figures. That caveat matters, because actual pay varies considerably depending on each state government’s budgetary commitment to the service.

At entry level, forest guard recruits and patrolmen are broadly estimated to earn between ₦77,000 and ₦90,000 per month, with uniform and feeding allowances on top. In some community-based or local government frameworks, baseline allowances have been reported as low as ₦20,000 to ₦35,000, which reflects the uneven financial support across states rather than any official federal policy.

Mid-level personnel, from Inspector to Assistant Superintendent, are estimated to earn between ₦90,000 and ₦180,000 per month, with field duty bonuses and risk allowances factored in. Senior officers, from Deputy Superintendent up to Commandant level, are estimated in the range of ₦200,000 to ₦350,000, with housing and field allowances included. At the very top, the Deputy and Chief Commandant General positions carry estimated monthly packages of ₦350,000 to ₦500,000 or more, including an official vehicle and housing. Across all ranks, the average monthly salary is broadly estimated at around ₦260,000, with a hazard allowance applied for field patrol duties. Officers also benefit from pension rights and employment security that a stable government posting provides.

Who qualifies and how do you apply?

Applicants must be Nigerian citizens aged between 18 and 35. A minimum of five WAEC, NECO or equivalent O-Level credits, including English Language, is required for standard enlistment. Higher qualifications such as an ND, NCE, HND or degree open access to higher-cadre positions. Candidates must be physically fit, carry no criminal record and demonstrate knowledge of the forest terrain in their home state. Anyone currently serving in the armed forces or another government agency must obtain a letter of discharge before applying.

The documents you will need include your NIN slip or national ID card, a state of origin certificate, your O-Level result slip, a birth certificate or age declaration, recent passport photographs and, where required, a medical fitness certificate from a government hospital. The state of origin certificate is particularly important given the community-based recruitment model; missing it will end your application at the first hurdle.

The application process itself begins at nhfss.org.ng, the only legitimate portal for NFSS recruitment. Confirm that a recruitment window is officially open before submitting anything. Africa Check has previously confirmed that fake NFSS recruitment portals have circulated online, and the NFSS Deputy Commander General has publicly stated that all genuine communications come only through verified official channels. Any Facebook post, WhatsApp message or third-party website asking you to register or pay a fee is not official. NFSS recruitment is free; anyone requesting a screening fee, registration fee or uniform charge should be reported to the nearest police station.

Once you have confirmed the portal is live, create an account using a valid email address and phone number, upload clear scanned copies of all required documents, and complete the application form ensuring every detail matches your certificates exactly. Print your application slip and keep it safe. Shortlisted candidates attend a screening exercise with original documents and photocopies of everything, followed by a minimum three-month intensive residential training programme covering tactical operations, physical conditioning and community relations.

The most recent NFSS recruitment drive took place in August 2025, when 24,000 forest guards were trained. As of late 2026, no new national recruitment window has been officially announced. Check nhfss.org.ng regularly for updates, and contact your nearest NFSS state command office for locally organised exercises.
