The Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC) has reminded electricity consumers that licensed providers are generally not permitted to recover electricity charges that are more than 12 months old.
In a consumer awareness notice, the commission said the restriction is intended to protect customers from excessive back-billing while promoting fairness in electricity billing across the state.
According to LASERC, there are only a few exceptions to the rule. Electricity providers may pursue older charges in cases involving meter tampering, illegal electricity connections or situations where consumers deliberately prevented meter readings.
The commission urged residents to familiarise themselves with their rights under the state’s electricity regulations, noting that the protection is provided for under the Lagos Retail Electricity Supply Code.
The clarification comes as many consumers continue to raise concerns over historical electricity bills issued by distribution companies. Some customers have reported receiving demands covering periods extending well beyond one year.
LASERC, which assumed regulatory responsibility for Lagos’ electricity market following the implementation of the Electricity Act 2023, has repeatedly stated that consumer protection remains one of its core priorities.
At the same time, the commission has maintained that electricity pricing in Lagos should reflect the actual cost of supply, arguing that a financially sustainable power sector is necessary to improve service delivery and attract investment.
The regulator has also announced plans to strengthen consumer support by opening additional zonal offices across Lagos to improve complaint resolution and provide easier access to regulatory services.
LASERC says it remains focused on improving transparency, encouraging investment in the electricity sector and working towards a more reliable power supply for residents and businesses across the state.
